Most web design and development projects turn into clusterfucks. The problem is not unique to web-based client services. Advertising projects, graphic design jobs, architecture assignments, filmmaking, and pretty much every other professional creative service usually begins with smart, talented people shaking hands across a table, and ends in finger-pointing and regret—like a Country & Western love song.
It doesn’t take a genius to see where this will all end up. The irony is that we’ve spent 10 months coming up with all these great ideas, but we won’t be able to afford to implement a single one of them. I think maybe I know where all the state money has disappeared to.
After some back-and-forth – usually several times over a week or two – a new solution emerged that still addressed the original animating concern, but without the red flags. Although some would call that ‘compromise’ – and sometimes that’s accurate – at its best, it’s closer to something like ‘refinement.’
One of the reasons I don’t like reading newspapers these days is that they’re all about Twitter. I’m so tired of hearing how great Twitter is. It’s a sore spot for me, cause they get all the glory, and there’s nothing but boredom for me, a two-plus-year tireless Twitterer. I used to feel Twitter was exciting. Now all the news on Twitter is about how much money they’re worth, and how many followers some Hollywood asshole has.
